DECATUR, Ill. — A gunman fired at an Illinois officer sitting in a patrol car in a church parking lot completing paperwork Friday night, according to authorities.
The suspect drove up to the driver side of the officer’s unit and opened fire about 10:45 p.m., investigators said. Fortunately, the Decatur police officer was not injured, WAND reported.
The officer who was shot at pursued the fleeing suspect. Police said the man pointed a firearm at officers during the pursuit. One officer shot at the suspect, but did not hit the suspect.
The pursuit terminated in the 1300 block of North Martin Luther King Drive and police took the gunman into custody. He was identified as Marcus Boykin.
Boykin, 29, was charged with attempted murder of a police officer, aggravated assault of a police officer, possession of a weapon by a felon, aggravated fleeing and eluding police and aggravated driving under the influence, Newsbreak.com reported.

Per normal protocol, the officer who shot at the suspect was placed on administrative leave.
