Retired Corpus Christi Police (TX) Department Captain Ken Starrs was killed when his truck struck a train on Wednesday morning.  He was 65.

Authorities said Starrs was traveling on his normal route to his current job as Assistant Commander of the South Texas Narcotics Task Force. Starrs was also the president of the Texas Fraternal Order of Police and was instrumental in bringing the Shop With a Cop program to Kleberg County.

Starrs joined the Corpus Christ Police Department in 1977 and retired in 2004 to join the newly formed Port of Corpus Christi Police Department.

The National Fraternal Order of Police President Chuck Canterbury said that the FOP “is saddened to learn of the death of Texas State President Ken Starrs. On behalf of the Executive Board we offer Ken’s family and his Texas FOP family our condolences and our prayers. Ken was a rock solid supporter of his FOP and was always known for his passion for officer safety issues and felt we should all work to preserve and defend the benefits of our nations police officers. Ken you will be missed may you rest in peace.”
