SILVER SPRING, Md. – A wild end to a police pursuit is all caught on tape. It featured an SUV backing up into a police patrol car, smashing the windshield, and rolling over. In the end, police got the suspects they were chasing.
Montgomery County Police responded to an armed robbery call Tuesday, July 22 at 9:47pm. A victim claimed he was walking along East West Highway near the Summit Hills apartment when two men in a white Ford Escape SUV tried to rob him. They got back in the vehicle and drove off.
Officers in the area spotted the SUV as it drove past along East West Highway. One officer began pursuing the vehicle and called for backup. The pursuit wound its way to Talbot Avenue, which has a one-lane bridge over railroad tracks. Police say a taxi was blocking the SUV from crossing the bridge.
Dashcam video from the officer's car shows what happened next. The SUV backed up, striking the police cruiser. It drove up onto the hood of the patrol car, smashing the windshield. As the driver kept hitting the gas, the SUV rolled off the cruiser and onto the road. Police moved in quickly and arrested the three people inside the SUV.
The driver of the SUV was identified as 17 year old Desean Anthony Kavanaugh of Northwest Washington. He faces a variety of charges, and is being held on a $750,000 bond at the Montgomery County Detention Center. Passenger Alan Jerome O'Brien, also 17 and from Northwest Washington, is being held on $150,000 bond. Another passenger in the car was identified as a 15-year-old boy from Northwest.
