EDINA, Minn. – (October 21, 2011) ReconRobotics, Inc., the world leader in tactical micro-robot systems, announced today that it has introduced the Recon Scout® Throwbot® LE, an affordable yet highly sophisticated micro-robot designed to help patrol officers assess potentially dangerous situations. Until now, use of robots by law enforcement has typically been restricted to tactical teams and bomb technicians, but the Throwbot LE is specifically designed to mitigate the everyday risks that patrol officers encounter during interrupted robberies, confined space searches, welfare checks and domestic disturbances. Moreover, the Throwbot LE kit is priced at $4,875 – thousands less than any other police robot.
Like the Recon Scout XT, the world’s leading tactical robot, which is also produced by ReconRobotics, the Throwbot LE is exceptionally small and easy to use. It weighs 1.1 pounds, is less than 6 inches long and can be thrown up to 50 feet. Once deployed, it is remotely operated using a small, handheld operator control unit (OCU) that also receives video reconnaissance from the robot. This video can alert patrol officers to hidden threats, giving the officers time to assess the situation and react. The entire Throwbot LE kit is packaged in a small MOLLE bag, which can be stowed in a patrol car for immediate use.
“When we introduced the first tactical micro-robot in 2007, we focused all of our attention on protecting SWAT personnel during high-risk operations,” said Alan Bignall, president and CEO of ReconRobotics. “Today, hundreds of tactical teams use our technology and are much safer because of it. With the Throwbot LE, we now hope to provide patrol officers with a significant increase in personal protection, acknowledging that they, too, often find themselves in rapidly escalating high-risk situations.”
More than 2,000 of the company’s Recon Scout® robot systems have been deployed by the U.S. military and international friendly forces, and by hundreds of law enforcement agencies, worldwide. The following chart compares the Recon Scout XT, the leading tactical robot, with new Throwbot LE.
