OPELIKA, Ala. (AP) — A judge has sentenced a Georgia man to death in the killing of an Alabama sheriff's deputy who was struck by a vehicle in 2009.
Lee County Circuit Judge Jacob Walker imposed the sentence Thursday on Gregory Lance Henderson of Columbus, Ga. Jurors had recommended life imprisonment, but the judge overruled the suggestion.
The Opelika-Auburn News (http://bit.ly/NFfkxX) reports Henderson was convicted of capital murder nearly a year ago in the death of Lee County Deputy James Anderson.
Evidence showed Henderson ran over Anderson while attempting to flee a traffic stop in Smiths Station on Sept. 24, 2009. Henderson was arrested by Anderson's partner when his car became stuck on top of the deputy.
The defense claimed Anderson's death was an accident.
