LAKELAND, Fla. (ABCActionNews) – Lakeland Police Officer Arnulfo Crispin died Wednesday morning, police spokeswoman Ann Dinges said. Investigators say Officer Crispin was shot in the head by 19-year-old Kyle Williams Sunday night while patting down suspects for weapons.
Crispin was 25.
On Tuiesday night, Police Chief Lisa Womack fought back tears during a news conference where she announced that Officer Crispin would not recover from injuries sustained from a gunshot wound to the head. She was surrounded by dozens of Crispin's friends and colleagues.
Officer Crispin was checking on a group of men who looked suspicious outside of an apartment complex Sunday night when he was shot.
Officers reached Crispin in his vehicle seven minutes after he was shot. He was found unresponsive and in critical condition.
Hours after perimeters were set up and police began searching for the suspect, 19-year-old Kyle Williams turned himself in.
Police say William’s parents help convince him to turn himself in over the phone.
Williams has been charged Attempted First-Degree Murder of a Law Enforcement Officer with a Firearm. He made his first court appearance Tuesday and was denied bond. His arraignment is set for January 24th.
