INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — Three formerly high-ranking Indianapolis police officers are suing the city over being demoted for how they handled a fatal crash involving an officer.
Assistant Chief Darryl Pierce, Deputy Chief Ron Hicks and Homeland Security Commander John Conley were demoted last year to the rank of lieutenant after former Officer David Bisard crashed his car into two motorcycles stopped at an intersection, killing one of the cyclists and injuring two others. Bisard was later found to have a blood-alcohol level above the legal limit.
A department review found the three officers failed to secure the site as a crime scene.
WISH and WRTV report they're suing for damages and lost income. Pierce says the three "were thrown under the bus" to take pressure off higher-ranking officials.
