The Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI) reported that suspect Ralph Stanley Elrod fired more than 50 rounds during a shootout with Peach County deputies, according to a WMAZ news report.
The shootout occurred as deputies responded to a disturbance among neighbors on Sunday, November 6, 2016.
Sgt. Patrick Sondron was shot and killed during the shootout. Deputy Daryl Smallwood was also shot and is now on life support.
Elrod was also shot in the abdomen during the barrage and was being treated at a hospital in Macon, Georgia following the gunfight, where he was served with an arrest warrant.
Peach County Sheriff Terry Deese said that Sgt. Sondron and Deputy Smallwood were immediately fired upon and had little time to respond.
