Somerset Medical Center Chooses In Motion Technology for Better Fleet Communications and Management

In Motion Technology, the leader in mobile networking technologies that efficiently connect and manage equipment, information and people in the field, today announced that Somerset Medical Center has deployed the company’s solutions to improve emergency medical communications, operations, and patient care. The deployment was part of a regional initiative to track paramedic resources and reduce response times across Somerset, Mercer and Hunterdon counties.

“With In Motion Technology, our crews in the field stay in constant contact with the ER, dispatch, and operations,” said Greg Paulson, EMS operations manager. “Now our crews are more efficient, response times are faster, and patients receive better care.”

In Motion’s onBoard™ Mobile Gateway turns ambulances into mobile hotspots, providing reliable, secure connectivity to laptops, defibrillators and other devices in and around the vehicle.

The Gateway allows paramedics to send EKG data from the field to the ER, so doctors can make a preliminary diagnosis and direct care. Heart patients can minimize time in the emergency room and be taken quickly to the catheterization lab, significantly reducing the time to treatment, also known as “door-to-balloon times,” and improving patient outcomes.

“Before In Motion, we used cell phone modems to send EKG data, but calls often dropped before readings could get through,” said Paulson. “Today, our transmissions are approaching 100% reliability.”

After the call, the Gateway provides crews with reliable, secure Internet connectivity so they can complete paperwork, review schedules, check emails and perform other administrative tasks before returning to the station. This keeps vehicles and crews on the road, increasing asset utilization and efficiency, and reducing response times.

Equipped with the latest GPS technology, dispatchers can now identify the closest unit, and track the vehicle en route.

Somerset Medical Center’s Emergency Medical Services Department provides advanced life support and basic life support coverage to Somerset County and portions of Hunterdon, Middlesex, Union, and Morris counties. Somerset’s 120 paramedics and EMTs serve a local population of approximately 250,000 and respond to 20,000 calls for service annually.

“Like Somerset Medical Center, first responders across the Garden State are looking for new ways to achieve more reliable communications, more efficient operations, and better emergency responses,” said Tony Morris, In Motion’s VP for sales and marketing. “From Sussex to Cape May Counties, we are helping agencies connect and manage fleets, and provide better service to New Jersey communities.”
