Richmond, Virginia: A mass shooting in a Richmond bar district has left 2 dead and several shot. Police said the gunfire erupted around 2:45 a.m. on North 18th Street in Shockoe Bottom. Officers who responded located an adult woman with fatal gunshot wounds at the scene, and additional officers soon found an adult male down and unresponsive.
Both were pronounced dead at the scene, police said.
Police Chief Rick Edwards later identified the two people killed as 23-year-old Genesis Tamar Jones and 42-year-old Dominic Antoine Jackson. Edwards said both suffered multiple gunshot wounds.
Investigators have not released a full sequence of events or a motive, but officials said the violence appears to have started as a verbal argument or fight that drew in additional individuals. Edwards told reporters it seemed a fight began, people intervened, and then shots were fired. He added that investigators believe there were at least two shooters.
Nine adults were shot in total, including the two victims who died. Richmond Police reported one additional adult female suffered injuries considered life-threatening, while the other survivors include three males and three females with injuries described as not life-threatening.
The department said some of the wounded were located at the scene and transported for treatment, while others went to the hospital on their own.
