Redskins safety Su’a Cravens took to Twitter Monday to accuse the Loudoun County Sheriff’s Office of racial profiling during a recent traffic stop. The second-year player, who has been inactive this season, posted videos in which he used profane language in blasting officers for singling him out, treating him roughly and falsely accusing him of smelling like marijuana, and he threatened to bring a lawsuit over the incident.
Cravens said he was followed to an Ashburn mall’s parking lot, pulled out of his car and “slammed” against it, placed in handcuffs and put in the back of a squad car for “supposedly doing 39 in a 35.” He added, “Not to mention he called for 4 more squad cars and cuffed and threatened my little brother for a grabbing his phone to record . . . And [you] wonder why we angry. Complete bulls—!”
According to online records, Cravens was cited for traveling at 39 mph in a 25 mph zone and for having an illegal tint on his car’s windows on Nov. 29. NBC 4 reports that Cravens, 22, was pulled over near Farmwell Station Middle School in Ashburn, and that the traffic stop was part of a safety initiative in a school enforcement zone.
“This traffic stop was not a case of racial profiling.”
According to TMZ, the Loudoun County Sheriff’s Office says that Cravens was pulled over as part of a crackdown on speeders in school zones.
“A deputy’s LIDAR received a reading on a vehicle that was traveling over the posted speed limit of 25 mph in a school zone.The deputy initiated a traffic stop and the driver pulled over into a shopping center.”
In the video, the tint is so dark, we find it hard to believe that the race of anyone in the car could have been seen plus Cravens was cited for the tint but the allegation of profiling remains.
