NEW ORLEANS (AP) — The City of New Orleans has paid more than $92,000 in overdue rent payments to a warehouse owner who has been housing the police department's evidence room.
WWL-TV reported on Sunday that the city had fallen three months behind on its rent for a private storage facility used to store evidence gathered by police in ongoing criminal cases.
The city followed through on a promise to pay up by the end of the week, writing a check to its landlord Friday afternoon. The total included more than $17,000 in interest and legal fees from previous lawsuits.
The city has been renting from the building's owner, Robert Maloney, since June 2007. Maloney previously took the city to court when it fell behind on rent, even though the lease is funded 100 percent by FEMA.
