WESTFIELD, Mass. (AP) — A veteran Westfield police officer killed while working a construction detail is being remembered for his service and as a friend and family man.
Police said Officer Jose Torres, a 27-year department veteran, was struck by a dump truck around 7:30 a.m. Thursday on Pontoosic Road in Westfield. He died later at a hospital.
Police Capt. Hipolito Nunez said at a news conference Torres had been his friend from childhood and was "a great family man."
Mayor Daniel Knapik said Torres was "a great ambassador for the department."
Nunez said the accident remains under investigation by law enforcement and the federal Occupational Safety and Health Administration.
Torres is survived by a wife and two sons.
