“I’m not a hero,” maintained Jonathan Smith during a Wednesday night interview with CNN’s Erin Burnett.
Smith was at Route 91 Harvest country music festival in Las Vegas, NV, during the mass murder attack. With presence of mind, he assisted approximately 30 people in escaping the shooting. He repeatedly risked his life and security of person in so doing.
Smith was shot in the arm and neck; a bullet remains in his neck as surgeons feared that its removal might cause permanent damage.
Smith was joined by Tom McGrath via phone during the interview with Burnett, a police officer who helped save his life after he was shot.

“You’re not going to die. I got you,” the officer said to Smith while placing pressure on Smith’s neck wound.
McGrath noted Smith’s modesty, describing Smith’s conduct as “extraordinary.”
“…..I think what he did was extraordinary. I’m somebody who trains for things like this… but I think somebody like him, is extraordinary. He showed tremendous bravery, and he’s somebody who inspires me.” McGrath said about the hero police officer.
“I owe that man my life,” said Smith. “From the moment I got hit, he was the first one to actually help me stop the bleeding. He never left my side, at all… I owe him my life.”
