ADEL, Ga. – Police in Georgia say an officer was wounded and the suspect was killed during a shootout with police. The injured officer is reportedly in stable condition after she was struck multiple times before the shooter was stopped.
The Georgia Bureau of Investigation said Steve Newsome, 31, died after a shootout when two officers of the Adel Police Department responded to a call of a stolen car. Police arrived on scene in Adel at about 2:15 a.m. Saturday and saw Newsome, the GBI said.
The responding officers exchanged gunfire with Newsome, according to the GBI. As a result of the gun battle, an officer was hit multiple times. She was rushed to South Georgia Medical Center, and the GBI said Saturday she is in stable condition, Fox 5 Atlanta reported.
After being struck by gunfire, Newsome was able to run a short distance before officers caught up and needed to provide emergency aid to revive him. However, the gunman was pronounced dead after EMS personnel arrived, according to the GBI, which will conduct the OIS investigation.
Once the autopsy and investigation is complete, it will be turned over to the Alapha Judicial Circuit District Attorney’s Office, to determine lawfulness.
