KEY LARGO, Fla. – A sheriff's deputy is dead after crashing her patrol car in Key Largo.
The Monroe County Sheriff's Office says Deputy Melissa Powers was going to check on another officer who couldn't be reached on his police radio Tuesday evening.
Investigators say Powers was involved in a single vehicle crash and had to be extricated from her car. She was transported to Mariner's Hospital, where she was pronounced dead.
The officer Powers was going to check on was located. He had apparently switched his radio to a different channel, temporarily putting him out of touch with dispatchers.
Powers had worked with the sheriff's office since December 2006.
She leaves behind a husband and two children.
