WASHINGTON, DC (WUSA) – Celebrities in DC are not supposed to receive police escorts. But actor Charlie Sheen got an escort from DC Police for his "Violent Torpedo of Truth" performance Tuesday night.
DC Police had their lights and sirens on as they approached Constitution Hall. During the ride, Sheen tweeted about the police escort:
"in car with Police escort in front and rear! driving like someone's about to deliver a baby! Cop car light #Spinning!"
Sheen included a picture that clearly shows the speedometer reaching about 80 miles an hour. As soon as he got out of the car at Constitution Hall, he talked about the ride.
"Yeah, we had a police escort. We ran more red lights than Brooke Mueller heading to a pawn shop," He said.
Police now say this escort should not have happened.
Councilman Phil Mendleson chairs a committee that oversees public safety. He said he met with DC Police Chief Cathy Lanier Thursday morning.
He says she did not authorize the police escort and now they both want to find out who did.
"There's an internal affairs investigation," he said.
According to DC Police, Sheen is supposed to pay for the escort.
"Usually it's around $50 or $60 an hour per officer," Mendleson said.
He said escorts are usually reserved for the President, top federal officials, diplomats, and the mayor. He also said the police in this case detail should not have been speeding.
Mendleson said the only exception for celebrities is when a movie is being filmed, and there are large crowds. Then it becomes a safety issue.
