Concerns of Police Survivors’ Trainings
Concerns of Police Survivors (COPS) is a non-profit organization that provides resources to assist in the rebuilding of the lives of surviving families of law enforcement officers killed in the line of duty. Throughout the year, COPS’ trainers are available to conduct in-service trainings on line-of-duty and survivor victimization issues. These trainings can range from a four-hour session to a full day of training depending on the agency’s needs. Whether an agency has experienced several line-of-duty deaths or recently experienced their first, COPS trainings provide a refresher course on providing the appropriate support for family survivors and traumatized officers.
In addition, COPS offers regional trainings entitled the “Traumas of Law Enforcement” each year in January, February and March. These three-day trainings, supported by funding from the Office for Victims of Crime, U.S. Department of Justice, provide 21 hours of instruction on the significance of proper death notification, the need for general orders addressing line-of-duty death and injury, collateral damages of the profession and dealing with the day-to-day traumas experienced by officers. COPS encourages surviving co-workers to attend the National Police Survivors Conference held during National Police Week in Washington, D.C. The conference will be held on May 14 and 16, 2007, and will offer seminars specifically for law enforcement.
