WWAYTV reports that the Topsail Beach (NC) Police Department says two people were struck by lightning including an officer.
Topsail Beach Police Chief Sam Gervase said Sgt. Zach Kooke was responding to a report about a 14-year-old girl who was struck by lightning near Serenity Point on the south end of the island at the beach around 5:00 p.m.
Gervase said the teen was transported to the hospital. On the way off the beach, he said the officer was then struck by lightning.
The Chief said the extent of the teen’s injuries are unknown at this time. He said the officer went to the hospital, but he is expected to be okay.
