Designed to modify a participant’s driving behavior by illustrating the consequences of choices made behind the wheel, One Simple Decision (OSD) by Virtual Driver Interactive (VDI) is being used internationally as a community safety and outreach tool.
Through a combination of driving simulation, intense interactions and first-person consequence videos, students are immersed in an intense, 20-minute experience that forces them to “live through” the results of the decisions they made while behind the wheel. OSD addresses distraction driving including texting, cell phone use, peer distractions and other electronics. OSD also provides information and experiences that deal with impairments including alcohol, legal/illegal drugs and fatigue.
Experiences were developed with the Sacramento County Court, the Sacramento County Sheriff’s Department, UC Davis Health Systems, Calstar Shock Trauma Air Rescue, the Sacramento Bee and Sutter Roseville Medical Center.
According to the Pasadena (Calif.) Police Department, “The OSD software is very engaging which helps keep the attention of young users. It goes beyond just driving aimlessly like other simulators and communicates through first person video, the consequences of bad choices made behind the wheel. This simulator is a great tool and we have received nothing but positive response from all we have presented it to.”
