Police and the community are still reeling from the death of Capt. Robert Melton last week but just days later, some Kansas City police officers were force to take cover after a blaze of gunfire was aimed at them.
It happened about 11:55 p.m. Sunday at Quincy and Thompson avenues. Police said the officers were on a call for service in the area when someone began firing shots at them.
“We were walking down and I heard bang, bang, bang, bang, bang,” said Carol Hansen. “Four cops were running, had their guns out and said ‘Get down or go home quick, they’re on the loose!”
Neighbors in Kansas City’s northeast are startled and some of them caught portions of it on their cellphones.
“I hear like five gunshots last night and all kinds of cops,” Tammy Masoners said.
Under fire, none of the officers were hurt. It wasn’t the only time someone has taken aim at police since Melton’s death.
Lenexa police say twice since then, someone may have taken shots at their officers. Both situations involved a motorcycle officer who was out helping with duties surrounding the shooting death of Melton.
Investigators say they still don’t have solid evidence it happened, but are looking into it.
Those incidents, coupled with Sunday night’s attack in Kansas City equal far too many.
