The Cleveland Police Department fired Officer Timothy Loehmann today for the 2014 fatal shooting of 12 year-old Tamir Rice.
Officer Frank Garmback, who was driving the patrol car, was suspended for 10 days.
On November 22, 2014, a 911 caller told a dispatcher that a juvenile “probably with a toy gun” was pointing it at people in a city park.
The dispatcher put the call out but never told officers the detailed information. Officer Loehmann and Garmback received a call of a man pointing a gun at people and they proceeded to the area with the belief that they were dealing with an “active shooter.”
Upon their arrival, both officers encountered Rice, who pulled the gun from his waistband and was subsequently shot by Officer Loehmann.
In December 2015, a grand jury declined to bring charges against the officers.
