Birmingham, Alabama – Multiple Birmingham (AL) police officers have been shot after they responded to an apartment complex on Sunday.  Birmingham Police Sergeant Rod Mauldin told reporters at a news conference that officers responded to a call at approximately 6:30 a.m. of a man and a woman who were shot on the 1000 block of Richard Arrington Jr. Boulevard.

Fox News reported that a male was found dead on the sidewalk when officers arrived and a female was found suffering from a gunshot wound. She was transported to a local hospital where she was pronounced dead.

Authorities say that the shooting began with an altercation with another male over a dog. Law enforcement executed a search warrant on what is presumed to be the suspects residence and they were met with gunfire upon entering the residence.

Two officers were shot and two others were grazed by gunfire. All four officers are expected to recover from their injuries.

Witnesses told police that the two victims visited the area often with a dog. The dog has not been found.

Officers did return gunfire, killing the suspect.
