Champaign, Illinois — A police officer is dead and another officer was wounded after they responded to a domestic violence disturbance early Wednesday morning. The Charlotte Observer reported that both officers were met with a armed suspect as they exited their cars at approximately 3:20 a.m.
The suspect, who has not yet been named, was killed in an exchange of gunfire. Police Chief Anthony Cobb released a statement, saying that Champaign police Officer Chris Oberheim, 44, “passed away due to injuries sustained while on-duty.”
Chief Cobb also explained that for Officer Oberheim, “His only intention was to serve, protect and help provide care before he was senselessly fired upon and killed… A true professional and devoted public servant, Officer Oberheim is remembered for his heroism, bravery, and the oath of office he honorably upheld in his commitment to duty.”
