PHOENIX – Four Phoenix police officers entered a burning home late Thursday morning and rescued a 3-year-old girl who was trapped inside.
Police spokesman Sgt. Trent Crump says the officers heard a radio call about the fire and raced to the scene in west Phoenix. They arrived before firefighters and found a family outside a single family home that was on fire.
The adults were frantic because a 3-year-old girl had gone back inside the home after the family evacuated, and there was too much smoke for them to re-enter.
The officers went inside and split up to search the home. The home was filled with smoke, and one slipped on a tile floor that was wet from residents' efforts to put out the flames with a garden hose.
The officer who fell then saw the little girl hiding behind some furniture.
