WORCESTER, Massachusetts — Worchester police officer Emmanuel “Manny” Familia died when he entered a pond Friday afternoon in an attempt to save a 14 year-old boy from drowning. At approximately 1:35 p.m., police received several calls reporting three children struggling in the water. Five officers entered the water in an attempt to save the teenager who tragically died as well.
An hour after the incident, divers located Familia. He was brought to shore, where emergency medical workers began lifesaving protocols but h was later pronounced dead at a local hospital. An hour later and almost two hours after the initial report, a 14-year-old boy was located by divers and rushed to a hospital, where he was also pronounced dead.
The teenager has not been identified.
Officer Familia leaves behind a wife, two children and his parents, police said.
