MILTON, Pa. — A former Lycoming County assistant district attorney was fatally shot by troopers of the Pennsylvania State Police following a standoff in Northumberland County last Friday, according to a report.

State troopers responded to a 911 hang-up call about 4 p.m. Friday, according to Corporal Jonathan Wooster.

The one-time assistant DA, William Kradlak Jr., 70, reportedly exited his residence at 7720 Route 44 in Delaware Township. After a brief standoff, there was a fatal exchange of gunfire, the Williamsport Sun Gazette reported.

After they were fired upon, “troopers returned fire, fatally wounding Kradlak,” Wooster said.

Authorities did not provide further details of the events that led to the standoff, according to PennLive.

Troopers involved in the shooting were apparently unharmed as there were no injuries mentioned.

The Northumberland County District Attorney’s Office and Pennsylvania State Police will conduct a joint investigation.

Kradlak was a Lycoming County ADA in 1986 when he accidentally shot himself in the chest at the County Courthouse with his own handgun, according to Sun-Gazette records.

Consequently, Kradlak was later removed from his position before he returning to work. The former district attorney later commented the shooting was a factor, the Gazette reported.

It was unclear how long his tenure lasted at the DA’s office.
