ANAHEIM, Calif. – Homicide detectives of the Anaheim Police Department have arrested David Steven Abbott, 30, for the random beating death of Rahmatolah “Davey” Yaghoubi, 70, on Monday, authorities said.

Anaheim officers responded to the intersection of Catalpa Ave. and Falmouth Ave. regarding an in-progress assault at 12:20 pm. Upon arrival, officers located and detained Abbott. They also discovered Yaghoubi suffering from severe head trauma. Yaghoubi was transported to a local area hospital where he died as a result of the injuries he sustained in the battering, Anaheim Police Department said in a press statement.

Furthermore, Abbott is the suspect in an assault and battery which had occurred about 20 minutes earlier, just before 12 p.m., detectives confirmed. In that crime, Abbott attacked a 60-year-old male resident of Anaheim who suffered minor injuries before Abbott fled the scene. That attack also appeared to be unprovoked and random, according to APD.

At the time of the attacks and subsequent murder, Abbott was out of custody, on bail for his May 15, 2021 arrest for felony assault with a deadly weapon. He was booked at the Anaheim Jail and being held in lieu of $2 million bail, although detectives are seeking a bail enhancement.
