BROOKLYN CENTER, Minn. — A former Brooklyn Center police officer charged with unintentionally killing Daunte Wright, 20, during a police detention will stand trial at the end of the year, a judge ruled Monday.
Hennepin County Judge Regina Chu set a tentative Dec. 6 trial date during a Monday virtual court hearing in which she found charges against Kim Potter were supported. Chu said she wished to “expedite” the case, FOX 9 Minneapolis reported.
Wright tried to flee from officers during the encounter, frequently misidentified as a “routine traffic stop.” At the time of his death, he had an open warrant related to an armed robbery case against him, Law Officer reported.
Potter reportedly shot Wright by mistake, thinking she was deploying her Taser.
Police bodycam footage shows the officer yelling “Taser! Taser!” as others struggled with Wright in his car, Law Officer reported.
The video shows Wright stepping out of his car, then leaping back behind the wheel and driving off.
“Holy s***,” the officer is heard saying on the video. “I just shot him!”
