Denver, Colorado: A Denver Sheriff’s Department deputy was arrested after investigators alleged he sold a vape pen to an inmate at the Downtown Detention Center while on duty.

The Denver Police Department arrested Deputy Sheriff Aniel Martinez on Thursday in connection with an incident that investigators said occurred on January 2, according to statements from the Denver Sheriff’s Department. Authorities said Martinez is facing charges that include official misconduct and introducing contraband.

Investigators alleged Martinez provided a vape pen to an inmate and arranged for the inmate to pay $60 using CashApp.

Investigators alleged the incident unfolded while Martinez was working at the Downtown Detention Center. The affidavit said the inmate and the deputy arranged payment through CashApp, and investigators pointed to communications and the payment plan as part of the case.

Martinez has been employed as a deputy since 2024. He was placed on investigatory leave on January 3.
