The Canada school shooting this week injured more than a dozen people and killed nine.
Investigators say the violence occurred on Tuesday, February 10, 2026, when authorities responded to reports of an active shooter at Tumbler Ridge Secondary School, a small school in a remote mountain community in northeastern British Columbia. Victims included a teacher and multiple students, largely in the 12 to 13-year-old age range.
As the details became clearer, officials described a separate crime scene connected to the attack. Police said the suspect also killed family members at a nearby residence before going to the school.
The suspected shooter was later found dead at the school from what authorities described as an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound. Police said firearms were recovered at the scene, and the investigation remains active as they work to establish motive, timeline, and how the suspect obtained the weapons.
Deputy Commissioner Dwayne MacDonald said that, while he identified the suspect as a female, she was born a male. Officials went on to describe the suspect as a “gun person.”
The suspect was identified as 18-year-old Jesse Van Rootselaar, with officials citing prior police interactions tied to mental health concerns. Reuters reported that officers had previously intervened and that firearms had been seized in earlier incidents, and that the suspect’s gun license had expired in 2024. Authorities have emphasized that the motive is still under investigation and that early conclusions should be avoided.
