SAN JOSE, Calif. — A 13-year-old boy was shot and killed in San Jose on Wednesday and three suspects have been taken into custody in connection to the fatal shooting, according to reports.

Margarita Santillan, and two juvenile relatives of Santillan ages 16 and 17, who were involved in the shooting were arrested by the San Jose Police Department. All three have been charged with homicide, Fox 11 Los Angeles reported.

Officers were dispatched to the shooting at 3:47 p.m. in the 2900 block of Little Wood Lane and located the three suspects when they arrived. The homicide occurred outside a home in the neighborhood.

The wounded 13-year-old male, who was shot through a car window after he had just arrived at the home, was taken to a nearby hospital, where he was pronounced dead, according to Fox 11.

“There’s no doubt that it becomes personal. And it’s personal no matter what the age of the patient is, when you’re involved in a traumatic event,” Melissa Harte, vice president of trauma services at the hospital, told the news organization.

Officers on Thursday canvassed for clues outside a home on Little Wood Lane. Remaining at the scene was bullet-riddled glass and a pierced window, evidence of a gun battle, Fox reported.

Neighbors said they heard shots as people scurried following the exchange of gunfire.

The preliminary investigation reveals the victim, who has not been identified and may be from a different city, was connected to the shooters and that his group had exchanged gunfire with residents at the home.

“The exchange of gunfire happened between the people who arrived at the residence, and the people who live on Little Wood Lane,” said San Jose Police Department Sgt. Christian Camarillo.

SJPD homicide detectives are currently conducting an “extensive” investigation into the homicide, but further details were not immediately available for public disclosure.

At this time investigators don’t have descriptions of the shooters or a motive, if one is known, Fox 11 reported.

“It’s tragic. It’s a 13-year-old. Regardless of what he was doing or what he was involved in, we have a 13-year-old that lost his life,” Camarillo said.

It is the 24th murder in the city this year.
