AMARILLO, Texas — A man opened fire on Texas police officers as they were looking for a different person Friday at an Amarillo apartment complex, according to a report.
Amarillo cops were searching for a man wanted on felony drug charges when a different man, George Michael Mireles, opened fire on them, The Dallas Morning News reported. Officers returned fire, fatally wounding the man, police said Saturday.
Mireles, 34, died at a hospital where he was taken following Friday’s exchange of gunfire at a local apartment complex, Chief Martin Birkenfeld said in a statement.
Officers approached Mireles since he resembled the man sought by law enforcement authorities, but he was not the focus of their quest. However, as fate would have it, Mireles was also wanted on a felony narcotic violation, although this fact was not learned until later, Birkenfeld said.
Police say they later found the man they were originally looking for and took him into custody.
There was no mention of injuries to officers involved in the shooting.
