Oklahoma Officer Ambushed During Traffic Stop

EDMOND, OK — A routine traffic stop turned into a life-threatening encounter for an Edmond police officer when a man launched a surprise attack with pepper spray and a large knife. The incident, captured on the officer’s body camera, unfolded near the intersection of 33rd Street and Broadway Extension earlier this week.

Officer Caleb Hodam had initiated a stop on a vehicle when, without warning, the driver exited his car and sprayed the officer in the face with a chemical agent, later confirmed to be pepper spray. In the confusion, the suspect — identified as Ocean Hudson — charged at the temporarily blinded officer and began stabbing him with what police described as a butcher knife.

Despite being critically wounded, Officer Hodam managed to fend off the attacker as he stumbled back toward his patrol unit. As the situation intensified, a civilian who witnessed the struggle jumped into action. The bystander intervened, grabbing Hudson and helping to wrestle him to the ground.

Additional officers arrived moments later and used a Taser to subdue the assailant, taking him into custody without further incident. Officer Hodam was rushed to the hospital where he underwent emergency surgery for multiple stab wounds.

The officer is now in stable condition and recovering.

Police Chief J.D. Younger praised the unidentified citizen who stepped in during the attack. “That bystander’s courage may very well have saved an officer’s life,” Younger said during a press conference. “This is a powerful reminder of the dangers our officers face and the bravery shown by members of our community.”

Hudson is now facing multiple felony charges, including attempted murder of a police officer, assault with a deadly weapon, and use of a chemical agent on a law enforcement official. He remains in custody as the investigation continues.
