GREENVILLE, N.C. — A sergeant of the Greenville Police Department is presumed dead after a residential fire early Saturday morning, according to authorities.

Firefighters responded to Sgt. Tim “Mac” McInerney’s home at 4 a.m. A body was recovered from inside the residence and is believed to be McInerney, police said. However, the identity has yet to be confirmed by the Pitt County Medical Examiner, WITN reported.

The cause of death and fire is undetermined. The State Bureau of Investigation will take the lead in the investigation, while the Pitt County Sheriff’s Office and ATF will assist, according to the news outlet.

An autopsy is scheduled for next week. Authorities said more information will be released once the autopsy is complete.
