The International Law Enforcement Educators and Trainers Association (ILEETA) will hold its 2006 International Training Conference and Expo in the Chicago suburb of Arlington Heights, Ill., April 25–29. More than 600 law enforcement instructors from across the United States, Canada, Australia, the United Kingdom and other nations will participate. Hosted by nine separate law enforcement agencies—Chicago Police Department, the Chicago office of the FBI, the Chicago office of the DEA and a multitude of Chicago suburban agencies—this conference offers courses for the law enforcement trainer. In addition, ILEETA will host a Vendor Expo alongside the conference—admission to the expo is free of charge for any law enforcement officer.

The conference will offer more than 80 separate topics, including 25 separate instructor certification courses, an M-16/AR-15 armorer’s course, instructor courses on the X-26 TASER, the PepperBall launcher and the FN USA 303, an instructor development track, a management and administration of training track and an officer safety and use of force track. In addition, the conference will feature a number of non-traditional courses, including identification and prevention of in-custody deaths instructor certification; developing and training role players; how to be an expert witness; instructing the Nintendo generation; and more.

Finally, the conference will hold a tongue-in-cheek World Cop Donut Eating Championship to raise money for both the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund and the ILEETA Scholarship Fund. ILEETA Executive Director Ed Nowicki says, “We were able to bring seven officers to the 2005 ILEETA Conference with full scholarships. . . . The donut event is all in good fun, which shows that cops are real people who aren’t afraid to poke a little good-natured fun at themselves for an honorable cause.”

Tuition for the 2006 ILEETA Conference is $295, and only 600 can enroll. The 2005 ILEETA Conference allowed 500 participants, and it filled up 10 days before the start of the conference. Nowicki says, “We aren’t going to sacrifice the quality or the integrity of the 2006 ILEETA Conference for sheer numbers.”
