A Dallas County grand jury has indicted a former Farmers Branch officer on charges of murder and attempted murder.
The grand jury determined “that there was probable cause found that Ken Johnson knowingly caused the death of Jose Cruz and probable cause found that he committed aggravated assault with a deadly weapon against Edgar Rodriguez Arevalo” on March 13.
Johnson, 35, was off-duty when he said he saw two teens breaking into his SUV at his Farmers Branch apartment complex. Video captured the moment Johnson chased 16-year-old Jose Cruz’s red Dodge Challenger down Marsh Lane. It appeared to show Johnson ram the back of the vehicle, which then spun out of control and crashed.
A warrant said Johnson used a semi-automatic handgun to shoot the teens and that he was “standing in the roadway” at Marsh Lane and Spring Valley Road with the gun when officers arrived.
Neither teen was armed.
