Eight Law Enforcement Professionals Receive Master’s Degrees

MONTEREY, Calif. — Eight members of the law enforcement profession were among 26 graduates who were awarded master’s degrees from the Naval Postgraduate School Center for Homeland Defense and Security on Sept. 24.

Law Enforcement professionals who earned a Master of Arts in Security Studies include:
•    Mike Callagy, Deputy Chief, San Mateo Police Department, San Mateo, Calif.
•    Peter Gomez, Supervisory Special Agent, FBI, Boston.
•    Theodore Moody, Assistant Sheriff, Las Vegas Metro Police Department, Las Vegas.
•    Cynthia Renaud, Commander, Long Beach Police Department, Long Beach, Calif.
•    Lisa Shahade, Deputy Chief, Amtrak Police Department, Philadelphia.
•    Tina Skahill, Chief, Chicago Police Department, Chicago.
•    Keith Taylor, Sergeant, New York Police Department, New York.
•    Laura Wilson, Public Safety Director/Chief of Police, Stanford University Department of Public Safety, Stanford, Calif.

The remaining graduates come from cities across the United States and comprise professionals from fire safety, emergency management, homeland security, public health, the military and natural resources management (please see attached list).

ABOUT CHDS: CHDS, established in 2002 and located at the Naval Postgraduate School (NPS), is the nation’s homeland security educator. Master’s degree students develop critical thinking, leadership and policy skills during a rigorous 18-month program. Each graduate completes a thesis on a current issue facing his/her jurisdiction. These theses often translate into policy and practice. To date, more than 300 participants have earned a Master of Arts degree in Homeland Security Studies from the Center, the first institution in the nation to offer a postgraduate degree in the homeland security field. The Center has developed a cadre of education programs and resources which are shared with other academic institutions around the country as part of its University and Agency Partnership Initiative (UAPI). More than 150 Executive Education Seminars for governors and mayors and their homeland security teams have been conducted around the United States. The CHDS is sponsored by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS), National Preparedness Directorate, within the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA). For information, visit www.chds.us.
