Chicago’s Unsolved Homicides Grow As Killings Surge

Killings in Chicago have surged. And a Washington Post analysis finds that Chicago Police have cleared just 1 in 5 homicides in 2016—a finding that Chicago police and city officials do not deny nor dispute.

However, police officials say that several factors are involved in the decline, including a higher burden of proof demanded by prosecutors, and an increase in gang-related and drug-related homicides which typically involved witnesses who are willing to come forward.

Chicago police spokesman Frank Giancamilli told the Washington Post that, “Over the last 25 years, the nature of closing cases has certainly changed.”

And in response to the increase in violent crimes, Mayor Rahm Emanuel has promised to hire 1,000 more police officers including 200 detectives within the next two years.
