A Sacramento County Sheriff’s Office deputy was killed early Christmas Eve in a single-vehicle crash that investigators believe was influenced by severe weather conditions in the region.
The deputy was identified as James Caravallo, a 19-year veteran of the Sacramento County Sheriff’s Office who was commuting to work at the Rio Cosumnes Correctional Center when the crash happened, officials said.
According to the California Highway Patrol, the crash occurred shortly before 6 a.m. at the intersection of Franklin Boulevard and Point Pleasant Road, in the area north of Point Pleasant Road near Elk Grove. Investigators said the vehicle was traveling southbound when the driver apparently lost control on a wet roadway, crossed into the opposite lane, and struck a power or utility pole.
Emergency responders attempted life-saving measures, but Caravallo was pronounced dead at the scene.
Sheriff’s officials described Caravallo as a colleague with deep ties across the agency. They said his death hit especially hard because it happened while he was traveling to his shift, not during a call for service. Local outlets quoted department representatives remembering him as humble and well-liked.
CHP said the circumstances remain under investigation, including the deputy’s speed and other potential factors, but early indications pointed to the wet conditions as a key contributor.
