EAST LANSING, Mich. — Police arrested 52 people after a large overnight revel party turned violent early Sunday near Michigan State University (MSU) campus in East Lansing, Michigan.
Lansing Police Chief Tom Wibert told reporters that the suspects involved in the riot could face expulsion, prison time and fines.
Between 3,000 and 4,000 revelers attended the event and police had to use tear gas to disperse the crowd.
Among the 52 arrested, 28 were the MSU students.
"A few individuals are responsible for what occurred last night and we will hold them accountable," Wibert said.
"To paint their actions with a broad brush covering all MSU students is wrong. We know that a large percentage of the crowd had no affiliation with the university," he added.
The party was part of a local festival called Cedar Fest, which has a long history of violent parties.
In 1986, there were 85 arrests during the festival, and 33 people were injured, including five police officers.
In 1999, revelers overturned cars, smashed store windows and set fires.
In 2005, a crowd of more than 2,000 college students and others swarmed downtown East Lansing. Police arrested 42 people.
