HAVRE DE GRACE, Md. — Maryland police have arrested a man who reportedly threatened to kill a police officer and then crashed his SUV into the front of the police station on Sunday in Havre de Grace.
The Havre de Grace Police Department said a man, later identified as Timothy Joel Jackson Kahl, had phoned the station around 9:40 p.m. Sunday. During the call, he threatened to murder an officer, WBAL-TV reported. Using investigative resources, police were able to determine the suspect was near his house on Village Drive.
Officers responded to the home where they found Kahl, 28, in his vehicle. The suspect was reportedly known to police.
Next, officers saw Kahl driving recklessly, hitting multiple parked vehicles and even attempting to run over police officers, WBAL reported.
Police said Kahl then drove toward the Havre De Grace Police Department. Upon arrival, he intentionally crashed his SUV through the station’s front doors right up to the lobby, striking another car on the way, according to WJZ-TV.
After ramming his vehicle into the building, he exited the SUV and tried to assault police officers. As a result, police deployed a Taser on the suspect and they were able to take him into custody. Kahl was then taken to Harford Memorial Hospital following his arrest, Western Journal reported.
He was discharged from the hospital Monday afternoon and booked at the Harford County Detention Center.
“Our officers used a lot of restraint in apprehending this subject and only used force necessary to get him under control. (It) came out as a win-win. Nobody got hurt,” Cpl. Ken Terry said.
“There is a dispatcher inside to the left, but the area where he crashed in, there was nobody inside, thank God, because there is only about a foot on either side of the vehicle that you could stand in, and if there were somebody in there, he would have hit somebody,” according to Terry.
Kahl faces two counts of attempted first-degree homicide, two counts of first-degree assault, reckless endangerment and three counts of malicious destruction of property greater in value than $1,000, according to WBAL-TV.
The police building sustained major damage, according to the outlet. Fortunately, no police personnel were injured during the outlandish crime.
