A Delaware grand jury has indicted William “Bill” Stevenson, the former husband of Jill Biden, on afirst-degree murder charge in the death of his current wife, Linda Stevenson, following a weeks-long investigation by the New Castle County Police Department and the Delaware Department of Justice.
According to investigators, officers responded on December 28, 2025, to a reported domestic dispute at a residence in the Wilmington-area community of Oak Hill and found Linda Stevenson unresponsive. Police attempted life-saving measures, but she was pronounced dead. Her body was then turned over to the Delaware Division of Forensic Science for an autopsy.
On Monday, February 2, 2026, detectives presented the case to a grand jury, which returned an indictment charging Stevenson, 77, with Murder in the First Degree, police said. Investigators then took him into custody at his residence without incident. Stevenson was arraigned and committed to the Howard Young Correctional Institution after failing to post $500,000 cash bail, authorities reported.
The criminal case is receiving heightened scrutiny because of Stevenson’s past marriage to Jill Biden, who later married Joe Biden. Officials and major outlets have confirmed the former marital connection, while noting that the charge is tied to the death of Stevenson’s current wife.
Stevenson and Jill Biden were married from 1970 to 1975, according to multiple reports.
Investigators have characterized the case as the result of an “extensive weeks-long investigation,” culminating in the grand jury indictment. Police have released limited details publicly beyond the timeline of the 911 response, the death investigation steps, and the charging outcome.
