A Houston police officer has drowned in his patrol car after floodwaters from Tropical Storm Harvey trapped him in his vehicle.
Three officials from the police department told the Houston Chronicle on Tuesday the officer was heading to work Sunday morning when he got trapped in his vehicle.
Sergeant Steve Perez, 60, died on Sunday morning during Harvey, Houston Mayor Sylvester Turner confirmed during a news conference Tuesday. Perez was heading to work when he was caught in floodwaters. Sgt. Perez was a 34 year veteran of the agency.
Houston Police recovered Perez’s vehicle at 8 a.m. Tuesday morning.
Perez’s wife said the police sergeant told her “I’ve got work to do” when she asked him to reconsider going to work.
