Baltimore officer on life support after being ambushed in her patrol car

Baltimore, Maryland – A Baltimore police officer was ambushed and shot as she sat in her car early Thursday morning. Officer Keona Holley has been with the Baltimore Police Department for two years and was on duty, in a marked police car, when the attack happened. The Washington Post reported that a shooter approached from behind the parked car and began firing.

Holley is on life support and her condition is described as critically ill.

Michael S. Harrison, Baltimore’s police commissioner, said Holley was at her post in a high-crime area in Baltimore’s Southern District at the time of the attack. A “vehicle of interest” is in custody, according to Harrison, and police are interviewing “several individuals.”

Harrison called the shooting a “cowardly, brazen act.”

“She was where she was supposed to be, doing what she was supposed to do,” he said.

In a statement, Maryland State Senate President Bill Ferguson (D-Baltimore City) said the “assassination attempt” on Holley “represents a level of depravity that shakes us to our core.”

“This is beyond the pale of anything remotely conceivable in our city,” the statement said. “I’m more than outraged, but that doesn’t come close to capturing the events of this morning. Simply put, things are broken and the trajectory we are on is totally unsustainable.”
