CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — Two Corpus Christi Police Department officers were shot, and a third officer was injured Friday afternoon while attempting to arrest a homicide suspect.

The incident occurred after officers were dispatched to a shooting in the 4900 block of Ayers Street. When officers arrived, they found an adult male suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. The victim was transported to a local hospital, where he later died from his injuries.

Investigators began searching for a suspect connected to the homicide and later located a vehicle believed to be involved. Officers initiated a traffic stop in the 3100 block of Port Avenue near Agnes Street. During that stop, the suspect reportedly produced a handgun and opened fire on the officers.

Two officers were struck by gunfire, and a third was injured by flying debris. All three officers were transported to a hospital for treatment. Police said one female officer was listed in critical condition, while the other injured officers were in stable condition. The suspect was also shot during the exchange and was reported in stable condition at the hospital.

Officials have also not yet released additional information about the firearm reportedly used, beyond reporting that a handgun was involved in the stop.

Field Lessons are offered strictly as general, industry-standard reminders drawn from common safety practices and typical policy considerations. They are not based on any inside knowledge of this specific incident, do not presume what actions were taken, and should not be interpreted as commentary on the decisions made at the scene.

  1. Treat every vehicle stop tied to a violent felony as a high-risk contact.

  2. Our research reveals that 75% of deadly force incidents occur within 10 feet, so vehicle stops of a violent suspect should be at a distance, using cover/concealment.
  3. Expect sudden assaultive movement and weapon presentation, especially from suspects facing serious charges or imminent arrest.

Dr. Travis Yates has pioneered a behavioral risk framework to help officers and leaders identify, assess, and articulate risk in rapidly evolving, uncertain situations. Find out more about the FOCUS Behavioral Risk Framework.
