Chicago – The Chicago Police Department is grieving the loss of Officer Krystal Rivera, a 36-year-old officer who was tragically killed during a tactical operation Thursday night.
Authorities confirmed late Friday that another officer unintentionally shot Rivera amid a fast-moving and dangerous situation. The incident unfolded as officers pursued a suspect into an apartment building. During the chase, another individual reportedly pointed a firearm at officers, prompting an exchange of gunfire.
Amid the confusion, Rivera was struck. Officers rushed to get her medical attention, but complications followed. According to Police Superintendent Larry Snelling, the initial transport vehicle experienced a mechanical failure and caught fire. Despite the chaos, fellow officers quickly transferred her to another car and continued to the hospital.
“She was given every chance we could offer in that moment,” Snelling said. “The officers who were helping her are physically okay.”
Multiple individuals were taken into custody following the incident.
Officer Rivera had served with the department for four years and leaves behind a young daughter.
