Update:

Jim Waters, the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police deputy chief who was critically injured in a car crash earlier this month, died Thursday afternoon at IU Health Methodist Hospital.

He was 48.

“Chief Waters comes from a long line of public servants and dedicated his life to serving Indianapolis,” Mayor Joe Hogsett said in a statement. “He worked tirelessly to build bridges between the police department he served and the community he loved.

“His untimely passing is nothing short of a tragedy, but the countless officers who worked beside Chief Waters know the legacy he leaves behind will continue to inspire generations of public safety and neighborhood leaders.”

Hogsett asked that Marion County flags be flown at half-staff.

IMPD Deputy Chief James Waters has been seriously injured in crash involving a semi in Plainfield.

The Plainfield Fire Department says the incident happened on I-70 near the State Road 267 intersection shortly after 1 p.m.

Waters, who is Head of Investigations, was transported to IU Methodist in with life-threatening injuries.

Fire officials say Waters was traveling eastbound on the interstate when a semi hit his vehicle from behind.

Fox 59 reports that Waters was driving an unmarked Ford Fusion police vehicle at the time.

Chief Bryan Roach stated, “Our department asks for the city’s prayers for off-duty Deputy Chief of Investigation James (Jim) Waters who, after being involved in a serious auto accident, continues to receive treatment at a local hospital.”
