A man suspected of shooting a St. Louis police officer on Sunday night was shot and killed in a shootout with police early Monday morning, according to a St. Louis Dispatch news report.

The suspect was wanted for questioning in the shooting of a St. Louis police sergeant. The sergeant, a 20-year police veteran was shot twice in the face, when a vehicle pulled up alongside his police SUV and opened fire abour 7:30 p.m. on Sunday, November 20, 2106.

Police were looking for the suspect and attempted to conduct a traffic stop of a vehicle believed to be driven by the man.  The suspect then bailed the vehicle around 12:45 a.m. on Monday, November 21, 2016.

During the foot pursuit which followed, the suspect began shooting at officers—and he was shot and killed when police returned fire.

The identity of the suspect was not immediately released. The sergeant was reported in critical but stable condition.

Regarding the attack on the sergeant, Mayor Francis Slay told reporters that, “He didn’t stop anybody. He didn’t point a gun at anybody” and that “He was targeted because he was a police officer.”

This is one of four incidents in which police officers have been shot—in vehicles or during traffic stops—over the weekend throughout the U.S.: 1) a San Antonio police officer was shot while writing a traffic ticket and killed; 2) a police officer in Sanibel, FL. was shot and wounded during a traffic stop; 3) and another police officer was shot during a traffic stop in Gladstone, MO, near Kansas City.
