The United States Department of Justice Office of Justice Programs, National Institute of Justice (NIJ) and the Rural Law Enforcement Technology Center (RULETC) conducted the National Law Enforcement Summit for Small, Rural and Tribal Agencies in Tulsa, Okla., Aug. 4 6. Geared toward rural law enforcement agencies with fewer than 50 sworn officers, the event hosted 60 chiefs of police and sheriffs, representing 40 states.

The purpose of the summit was to educate attendees on the resources and technical assistance available from NIJ; obtain input from the practitioners on NIJ research priorities; identify the major problems facing small and rural agencies; assess training needs; and collect information for a report that will help guide funding and research for these distinctive agencies. RULETC anticipates completing the final report by December 2009.

The summit, which was free to participants and their agencies, was funded by NIJ in agreement with RULETC, which managed the event. Participants were selected from across the U.S. for their recognized roles as leaders in the small and rural law enforcement community.
